Our Story
Like you, the Mountain Sports community lives and loves the casual, local lifestyle. We pride ourselves on offering exceptional, helpful, hometown customer service and are deeply committed to our community and the environment. As the only Patagonia shop in the region, we stand by our quality products and have adopted Patagonia’s 1% for the Planet program, donating 1% of all sales to nonprofit conservation and environmental education organizations. And because of our loyal customers, we are thrilled to report that Mountain Sports has been able to invest more than $250,000 back into the Flagstaff community!
From the Junior Olympics to camp counselor, to lobster fisherwoman, river rafter and elementary school teacher, Lisa Lamberson now carries on the traditions and passions of the family-owned and operated business as owner of Mountain Sports. The specialty outdoor retailer was founded on a love of adventuring by her dad, Mark, and her Uncle Bruce in 1973. The brothers, ages 22 and 20 at the time, had a goal of making $100 a week each and living their dream of alpine skiing every chance they got. Opening the first store in Casper, Wyoming with the latest winter fashion trend – 100 puffy jackets – Mark and Bruce were stunned by their success. Soon they became the experts on every new outdoor sport that came along – mountain biking, windsurfing, snowboarding – they loved it all! Today, 50 years after opening the first store, the joy of playing outdoors continues to be felt throughout the stores and in the enthusiasm of the Mountain Sports team.
At Mountain Sports, the vibe is always warm and welcoming. We are not only an outdoor shop; we are a gathering place in the heart of the historic downtown. We open our doors as a community space for locals and travelers alike. We use our retail shop to celebrate our friends, neighbors, artists and athletes and their involvement in all things fun and Flagstaff.
This year, as Mountain Sports celebrates a half century in business, we invite you to join in the celebration through community activities we’ve planned this fall! We also have big plans for the next 50 years!
