Celebrating 50 Years of Mountain Sports Flagstaff & Their Commitment to the Community

In 2023, Mountain Sports Flagstaff proudly celebrated 50 years in business, marking a significant milestone that coincided with Patagonia’s own 50th anniversary. Just like Patagonia, Mountain Sports has always been driven by a passion for outdoor adventure and a deep commitment to protecting the environment. The shop is known for its exceptional, hometown customer service and is deeply rooted in the Flagstaff community. As the only Patagonia shop in the region, Mountain Sports stands by the quality of every product they offer, and they embrace Patagonia’s 1% for the Planet program, donating 1% of all sales to nonprofit conservation and environmental education organizations. Thanks to the loyalty of their customers, Mountain Sports has proudly contributed over $300,000 to the Flagstaff community.

The story of Mountain Sports began in 1973 when Mark Lamberson and his brother Bruce opened the first store in Casper, Wyoming. Driven by their shared love for alpine skiing and outdoor adventure, they started with 100 puffy jackets—an unexpected success that propelled them into a lasting journey of exploring every new outdoor sport that came along, from mountain biking to windsurfing to snowboarding. Now, 50 years later, Mark’s daughter, Lisa Lamberson, continues the family legacy as the owner of Mountain Sports, carrying forward the tradition of sharing the joy of outdoor exploration with the Flagstaff community.

Mountain Sports isn’t just an outdoor retailer—it’s a gathering place in the heart of historic downtown Flagstaff. More than just a shop, it’s a space where locals and travelers come together to connect, celebrate, and share in the love of the outdoors. The store regularly hosts events that highlight local artists, athletes, and community members who are passionate about all things Flagstaff and outdoor adventure.

As Mountain Sports reflects on 50 years of business, the team is excited about the future. Fall 2023 was filled with community activities to celebrate this milestone, but the celebration doesn’t end there. Mountain Sports Flagstaff is looking ahead with plans to continue supporting the community and the environment for the next 50 years and beyond.
